If you want to surf, you either have to live somewhere where there are good waves - or you have to travel. But surfers Finn Springborn and Philipp Sigmund prove that you don't necessarily have to flee to distant, warm climes. The two surfers and filmmakers travelled to Denmark, Norway and Scotland over a period of two winters to plunge into cold waters. They captured their experiences in ReDiscover, an impressive homage to surfing in winter.

In their film ‘ReDiscover’, Finn, Matze, Sören and Jonas take us to the wild coasts of Denmark, Norway and Scotland. Why are surfers travelling to these regions of the world in winter instead of enjoying warmer places? ‘Over the years, we've made it our mission to get to know nearby coasts, and as soon as we realised that you don't have to travel around the world to find good waves, we got hooked,’ says Finn Springborn, who some of you may not only know as a surfer, but also as the editor of “Waves & Woods” magazine. For ReDiscover, he and his friends ‘spent years exploring the endless forests, the long sandy beaches, the dunes and the steep cliffs just a few hundred kilometres from home’, Finn told us.

"You don't have to travel around the world to find good waves"

At the same time, ‘ReDiscover’ is intended to be more than just another random surf film designed to awaken longings. Rather, they wanted to realise a larger project that would not simply fizzle out in the age of short-lived social media posts - and thus be immediately forgotten. ‘We simply started collecting footage at the beginning and after a bit of brainstorming, the rough concept was finalised and we were able to work in a more targeted way,’ says Finn. ‘The biggest challenge was actually finding periods of time when Philipp and I both had time. Of course, we couldn't always wait for the best conditions, but that's what surfing is all about sometimes.’

They were accompanied by the two photographers Matze Ried and Sören Franck, as well as Marc Thomsen. Last but not least, Thore Rocksien and Martin Nussbaumer also jumped on board at short notice.
